The Volvo S60R and V70R are both equipped with a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine, that are equipped with a K24 turbo. These put a stock power output of about 300 horsepower, but many enthusiasts and owners eventually want their P2R Volvo to put out more power than stock. Turbo upgrades are one of the main solutions to resolve this issue (alongside the other necessary upgrades to not blow your engine up and handle the new power increase). There are a handful of bolt-on options for upgrading your turbo on your Volvo S60R or V70R that we will dive into depth on each of the options that are available right now for you to purchase, bolt on and upgrade the performance of your Volvo.
Simplest Option: K24 Hybrid Turbo Upgrade
The first option for upgrading your turbo and the most commonly used option within the community to get more power is a simple and widely available option: a K24 Hybrid. A K24 Hybrid is a rebuilt stock K24 that comes factory in these cars, but the compressor housing is made larger by machining it out, and then installing a larger compressor wheel. Almost all K24 Hybrids are different when it comes to compression wheel size, due to the process of making these, they are extremely customizable. There are tons of different options that range from much larger compressor wheels than stock, to only slightly larger.
Viva Performance has readily available K24 Hybrid turbo kit. The stock K24 turbos they rebuild go under a full process, starting with a full inspection, replacing all the seals and other maintenance, and then machining and installing their Billet Hybrid Compressor Wheel. The upgraded compressor wheel has a 54.6mm Inducer, and a 71mm Exducer and stock K24 compressor wheel has a 45.7mm Inducer, and a 62mm Exducer. Viva claims a 35% increase in performance overall with their hybrid turbo installed, and about 30% increase in airflow (CFM), as well as maximum boost levels are available from mid-range to red line RPMs (3000-6800).
This is one of the simplest options for power and performance increase on these Volvo P2Rs, as its completely bolt on and it is also a widely available upgrade due to the surplus of K24 turbos since they come stock on these cars. K24 Hybrids vary in options for compressor wheel sizing due to them being custom made, and they are available from aftermarket selling sites, Viva Performance, or you can remove your stock K24 from your car and find a shop near you that can do the service and rebuild your turbo.
IPD 4T4 Kit
The next Volvo S60R & V70R turbo kit option for upgrading your performance and turbo on your P2R, but remaining in the fully bolt on realm that doesn’t require any fabrication leads us first to IPD’s 4T4 turbo setup. This is a ball bearing turbo setup, which is generally considered better than journal bearing turbo (the K24 is journal bearing) due to reasons like faster spool up time, requires less oil due to less friction, and can reach higher speeds. IPD includes dyno testing against a complete stock K24 setup P2R, as well as a Stage II tuned stock K24 P2R. The results are shown below:
This graph clearly shows the excellent power that the 4T4 turbo setup provides, and really shows that this is a high-level contender for a bolt on serious performance upgrade for your P2R. While the data looks great, there are a couple of things that I consistently saw when researching the 4T4 setup however. This setup is very expensive, there have been some quality issues with the 4T4 turbos, and IPD will not reveal the 4T4 manufacturer so replacing parts on these can be very difficult and expensive. Here is a good discussion from enthusiasts on Swede Speed that covers these issues mentioned above.
Other Less Talked About Turbo Upgrades
Here are some more Volvo S60R & V70R Turbo kit options that are still bolt on, but they have minimal traction within the Volvo P2R community. Simply meaning these kits aren’t talked about much within the P2R community that I could find. However the companies that provide these options are pretty known and recommended by enthusiasts.
First is 8eight Fab who is a Volvo performance focused fabrication shop. There are many recommendations across the Volvo community to refer to them for many different things, including big turbo and performance cravings. It seems that 8eight Fab used to carry a upgraded turbo kit on their site, but I can’t seem to find it, or it is out of stock. Regardless, reaching out and contacting them would be an excellent option for a custom turbo upgrade.
Next is KT4 Performance, another Volvo focused performance brand. They provide a Mamba 20T turbo kit that is a direct bolt on kit for P2Rs. KT4 claims that these bolt on turbos allow for about 350 Horsepower. KT4 also has a specific page dedicated to Volvo Big Turbo Kits where they say that they have performance big power kits available for the P2R platform, but they don’t have one listed on the page. This is another option to reach out to KT4 and see what they have to offer in this realm, as it would still be a bolt on option with all the necessary pieces to mate the bigger turbo kit to the stock locations on your car.
